The Family Photograph Album
in late 19th century America

Cyanotype of Main Street
Forbes Library
A public lecture by Anthony Lee
Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 2 pm
at Historic Northampton
Anthony Lee, Idella Plimpton Kendall Professor of Art History at Mount Holyoke College, will speak at Historic Northampton on "The Family Photograph Album in late 19th century America." His illustrated presentation will address such questions as: What went into these albums? What did their makers want from them? What historical forces shaped them?.
Anthony Lee's talk is being held in conjunction with Ellen Augarten's exhibition, Entering Northampton, a series of double exposures of Northampton sites and landmarks based on those featured a turn-of-the century photograph album containing cyanotype snapshots. In 1998, this album was found in the home of the late Agnes Wright Howland (1903-1995) on Lyman Road in Northampton as the house was being cleared and cleaned for sale. The 350 photographs, made in the five years between 1895 and 1900, include images of families, familiar Northampton sites, the Smith College campus and identified and unidentified landscapes. The album was donated to the permanent collection of Historic Northampton. Click here to view the photographs from the album online.
This event is free and open to the public.
