Art by Genevieve Burnett

Anchor House of Artists presents an exhibition at Historic Northampton opening July 12th of nearly twenty paintings by Northampton based artist Genevieve Burnett. Having lived through the most controversial decades of Northampton's history relating to institutionalization and care for the mentally ill, Genevieve offers a unique glimpse into a community often spoken of but rarely heard themselves. Her subject matter is at times grim and mysterious but also often peaceful or sweet, as she shows her truth through the eyes of an artist. Her paintings, along with ephemera from the Northampton State Hospital, and selections from the artist's journals stand to challenge the audience's preconceptions of a life with mental illness.
