David W. Blight, ed. When This Cruel War is Over: The Civil War Letters of Charles Harvey Brewster (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1992) This exceptionally literate collection of 137 letters chronicles the experiences of an ordinary Union soldier caught up in extraordinary events. This is a fine collection of Civil War letters, beautifully edited by David Blight.  The introduction should serve as a model for other published collections. Joseph T.
