Hair Brooch with Rosettes, c. 1850-75 (71.180)

This brooch contains many hair rosettes and whorls within a fluted gold border. Each rosette is made of wounded hair strands that are coiled into spiral flowers. The rosettes, formed from many different colors of hair, probably represented a collection of hair from loved ones; the rosettes are another way to display several people's hair within one piece.
