Abigal Lyman, d. 1776

Abigal Lyman, d. 1776

Abigal Lyman: In Memory of Mrs. Abigal Lyman, Wife of Mr. Joseph Lyman who Died May 1st 1776 in the 75th Year of her Age. "The grave is that home of Man Where dwells the Multitude. This grave has a remarkably detailed and naturalistic cherub form. This grave would be an example of the classical revival in gravestone art. The angel is centered in a pediment form, and the top of the stone appears like an arch. The face is in high relief with fully carved out features such as eyes with lids and pupils, hair indicated, a nose in relief, and a curved mouth. The feathers in the wings are individually rendered and in lower relief than the face.
