Jemima Lyman, d. 1785

Jemima Lyman, d. 1785

Jemima Lyman: The Body Of Jemima Lyman widow of the late Capt. William Lyman is here deposited. She was born in Northampton November 1726 & died Feby 1785 in the 59th year of her age. This white sandstone marker is concerned with the formal division into three parts and symmetry. The face, which is not a death's head, but not fully a cherub, is central, and looks very serious. There are organic flowers coming out from the head in place of wings. Above the head are three blossoms, one above the head between two hallowed out flowers. The artist seems unconcerned with symbolism or trends in gravestone art.
