Isaac Chapman Bates, d. 1845

SENATOR ISAAC CHAPMAN BATES b. January 29, 1779, Granville, MA d. March 16, 1845 Valedictorian of his 1802 Yale University class, Isaac Chapman Bates established himself in Northampton in 1805. He studied law with Judge Hinkley, and was admitted to the bar in 1808. He was a Representive in the legislature in 1808, 1809, and 1813. From 1827 to 1835 he represented the Northampton district in Congress, declining re-election. He was also a member of the Senate and the Governor's Council. In 1841 he was chosen as a United States Senator. He died in Washington before his term had ended.
