Northampton Architecture- Quadrant 4

Old Bank, Northampton, Massachusetts

Old Bank

The Old Bank, located at 135 Main Street, was built in 1866. Architect William Fenno Pratt designed the building in Renaissance Revival style.

A cast iron front with brick sides distinguishes the Northampton National Bank building from its later 19th century neighbors on Main Street. Bold detailing reveals its relationship with the Smith Charities Building on lower Main Street, as both buildings are the work of the local architect W.F. Pratt. The bank is built with cast iron, a material with the tendency to weaken and collapse when exposed to heat. Surprisingly, the structure survived through close fires in 1870 and in 1874; it still stands in its original form.
