Daguerreotype & Photograph Collections

Historic Northampton's photograph and negative collection totals approximately 10,000 items. Over 700 daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes comprise the collection of early photographs. Approximately 730 glass plate negatives taken by the Howes Brothers photographers of locations in Northampton, Florence and Leeds document the city and its villages in the late nineteenth century. The bulk of the photograph collection is paper-based. The museum's photographs are significant not only for their local subjects, but for their representation of local photographers.
